Ferndale, WA – Motorcyclist Dead in DUI Crash on I-5 & Portal Way

Ferndale, WA (August 18, 2024) – A suspected DUI accident on I-5 in Ferndale on Friday morning, August 16, tragically ended in the death of a Blaine man. Ferndale, WA – Fatal DUI Accident on I-5 Claims Life of Blaine Motorcyclist Washington State Patrol (WSP) reported that the crash occurred around 2:40 a.m. when a vehicle entered Interstate 5 southbound at Portal Way and lost control, striking a barrier and coming to rest in the left lane. A motorcyclist, identified as 47-year-old Evan Hayes of Blaine, was unable to stop in time and collided with the vehicle. Despite wearing a helmet, Hayes sustained severe injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he sadly passed away.

The driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old man from Bellingham, and two passengers were also injured and taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center. Two of them were later arrested. The driver faces charges of vehicular homicide, while one of the passengers, a 20-year-old man from Ferndale, was booked on outstanding warrants. The WSP continues to investigate the incident. Drugs or alcohol were confirmed to be involved. The southbound lanes of I-5 were closed for several hours but have since reopened.
