Oceanside, CA (August 10, 2023) – A tragic crash occurred on the evening of August 10th when a multi-vehicle crash took place on Interstate 5 in the Oceanside area. The crash resulted in one person losing their life and injuries to four others. The crash prompted the reaction of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to the scene.
Around 8:58 p.m., the incident happened on the northbound lanes of I-5, just after State Route 78. This information comes from an official statement by the CHP.
According to the CHP reports, a red sedan was parked by the roadside for reasons that are still unknown. During this time, a high-speed black Chevrolet Corvette was passing on the right shoulder and collided forcefully with the stationary red sedan. The impact pushed the sedan into the slow lane (lane number four). Following this, an 18-wheeler crashed into the sedan.
The driver of the Corvette, a 39-year-old resident of Oceanside, abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot by climbing a nearby hill. However, law enforcement officers located and apprehended the driver.
Unfortunately, a female passenger in the red sedan lost her life at the scene, and her identity has not been disclosed. The four other occupants of the sedan suffered various injuries, ranging from moderate to severe. They were taken to a nearby medical facility for urgent care.
In response to the collision, the right lanes on northbound I-5 near State Route 78 and the westbound SR-78 to northbound I-5 connector ramp were temporarily closed.
Authorities have indicated that there are signs pointing to the involvement of driving under the influence (DUI) in this tragic incident. The driver of the Corvette, Edwin Vincent Hoffman, has been arrested and is facing several charges, including felony DUI, felony hit and run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families affected by this tragic event. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured individuals.
