Tacoma, WA – Fatal Crash on I-5 NB at McKinley St., One Fatality and One Injury Reported
Tacoma, WA – (July 14, 2023) – The Washington State Patrol (WSP) responded to a severe crash that occurred on Interstate 5 in Tacoma on Friday morning, July 14th.
The accident occurred on the northbound lanes of I-5 at the intersection of McKinley Street, leading to the obstruction of four left lanes and causing significant traffic congestion.
According to troopers, the crash was initiated by an 18-year-old driver who was allegedly engaged in a race with another vehicle. The collision resulted in a pickup truck, carrying two adults and two children, including a 1-month-old infant and a 3-year-old, being struck by the racing car and subsequently flipping over multiple times.
Trooper John Dattilo from the WSP expressed gratitude that all occupants of the pickup truck were securely restrained. Both children were appropriately secured in car seats suitable for their ages, and the parents were wearing seat belts.
Emergency responders transported all the victims to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The woman and two children sustained minor injuries, while the man suffered severe injuries. Currently, no further details regarding the victims or their conditions have been released.
The driver of the white car responsible for the collision has been apprehended on charges of vehicular assault.
The WSP is still actively searching for the driver of the second white BMW involved in the race.
