Whatcom Co., WA – Two-Car Serious Crash on I-/Zell Rd. Leaves Injuries
Whatcom County, WA (September 1, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle crash shut down part of Interstate 5 in Whatcom County late Sunday, August 31, leaving at least one person with major injuries. Washington State Patrol confirmed that the crash occurred near Zell Road in Custer around 11:30 p.m. Trooper Kelsey Harding reported that two vehicles collided in the southbound lanes, forcing all lanes to close for several hours.
The Washington State Department of Transportation redirected traffic off I-5 from the Birch Bay-Lynden Road interchange to the Grandview Road interchange through Portal Way. Emergency responders provided aid to those injured, with at least one victim transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The exact number of injured parties remains unconfirmed, but authorities classified the wreck as a serious injury collision.
Towing crews removed the wrecked vehicles, but debris cleanup kept lanes closed until early morning. Investigators are examining the crash site to determine the cause.
