Bakersfield, CA (September 17, 2025) – A deadly crash occurred early Wednesday morning, September 17, on the southbound lanes of I-5 near Mettler, leaving at least one person dead. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident was first reported at 2:49 a.m. when a vehicle was observed traveling at nearly 100 miles per hour. Just over 20 minutes later, around 3:11 a.m., the car collided with a semi-truck along the busy stretch of highway.
The impact was severe, leaving both vehicles damaged and blocking multiple lanes of traffic. Emergency responders quickly arrived on scene, but despite life-saving efforts, at least one victim was pronounced dead at the site. The Kern County Coroner’s Office was called shortly after 3:40 a.m. to take over responsibilities for the deceased. The name of the victim has not yet been released, pending family notification.
CHP officers closed down the southbound lanes near the crash site for several hours as investigators documented the wreckage and worked to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. Both speeding and reckless driving are being considered as possible contributing factors.
We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
