Camp Pendleton, CA – Fatal Pedestrian Crash on I-5 Near Basilone Rd.
Camp Pendleton, CA (September 22, 2025) – A deadly crash on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton left one man dead early Monday morning, September 15. The accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Basilone Road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Investigators reported that a pedestrian crossed the northbound lanes and entered the southbound side of the freeway when he was struck by a Ford Mustang. The car was driven by a 21-year-old man from Fontana. The impact caused severe injuries, and the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding officials.
CHP officers closed several lanes of traffic as they worked to investigate the incident and clear the roadway. Drivers in the area experienced delays while crews managed the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.
The crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine the circumstances leading to the pedestrian’s presence on the freeway.
