Oceanside, CA – Motorcycle Rider Hurt on I-5 S After Mattress Falls from Pickup

Oceanside, CA (August 23, 2025) – On Saturday morning, August 23, a motorcyclist was injured in a strange accident on southbound Interstate 5 near La Costa when a mattress fell off a pickup truck and struck the rider. According to the California Highway Patrol, the mattress dislodged from the bed of the pickup, bounced across the freeway, and hit the motorcycle in the carpool lane. The impact caused the rider to lose control and crash.

The motorcycle was left in the HOV lane while the rider managed to walk to the center divider, where they called for help. Emergency responders quickly arrived and closed the affected lanes to prevent further collisions. The rider was treated at the scene before being transported for additional medical care.

The pickup driver stopped on the shoulder and cooperated with officers. Investigators are determining whether the pickup was properly secured and if citations will be issued
