Tacoma, WA – Injury Crash on I-5 SB near Portland Ave
Tacoma, WA (January 2, 2026) – A multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 southbound sent one person to the hospital early on New Year’s Day, January 1, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The crash happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. on I-5 SB near the Portland Avenue area. Authorities confirmed that six vehicles were involved in the collision.
Troopers said a driver slowed to a stop in traffic. Another vehicle then rear-ended the stopped car, triggering a chain reaction crash.
Several additional vehicles collided before all six cars came to rest on the roadway. In total, nine people were involved in the crash.
Emergency responders arrived and evaluated all occupants at the scene. One person was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Officials reported no life-threatening injuries at this time. Four of the vehicles sustained significant damage and required towing.
